An interview with Kate for Urban Feather’s 17th birthday!

We couldn’t do any of this without you wonderful people in our extended Urban Feather family.

Thank you for being part of the journey!

Our awesome director is not one to blow her own trumpet so we’d love to do it for her!

She is hardworking, fun, talented & thoughtful! Always going above & beyond when helping others – from clients to hockey teams, to family & friends.

To celebrate I accosted her with a few interview questions (aka we took a nosy in to her creative mind)…

What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning?

Normally it’s because no one else in the house has got up to feed the cats.

I get the guilt trips if it’s gone 8.30am and no-one has fed them and all is quiet

What is your favourite thing about your work?

Very hard to answer as I like lots of aspects.

Obviously being a designer at heart I love the creative side of the business and getting into the zone when designing.

Having said that, so long as I can separate the two, I’m also a bit of a maths geek, so do love the business management side too.

At the end of the day I don’t feel like it’s work, instead I get paid for doing the things I love.

What did you want to be growing up?

Initially, as most little girls did (I think) I was dead set on becoming an air hostess, or cabin crew as the role is called now.

Somewhere in the middle I remember wanting to be a mechanic (weird I know) and by the time I was 14 I knew some form of design was the way forward.

How did you get in to Graphic Design?

I’ve always enjoyed drawing and from taking my school options at 14, they were geared towards a career in either architecture or graphic design.

The design angle won over and after gaining a first class honours degree in Graphic Design, I joined the working world.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to start their own business?

It’s bloody hard work.  When it’s going well it’s great, when the challenges hit it’s hard and every day you learn something new.

Expect to work a lot of hours, especially in the beginning and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

What do you love to do in your down time?

2020 actually slowed me down.  Previously I’d be taxi-ing the kids all over, playing hockey and coaching Colts hockey.  Looking back, I don’t know where I found the time!

I’ve now got a new found love for my slow cooker and have been reading… lots – in fact would probably rather read a book than watch TV.

What are you most proud of?

Hmmm, that’s a hard one.  Lots of things really, but if I really think about my personal achievements, then Urban Feather has to be high on the list.

I remember my first employer back in 1999 asking me where I’d be in 5 years time and I told her I’d like to be self employed and running my own business.

In hindsight I can’t believe I actually said that to my boss, but 5 years later, that’s just what I was doing; and now 17 years on, thanks to some great people who will always be part of the Urban Feather family, we’re still here, working our way through a second recession and helping other business people to feel proud of their own businesses.

Who or what inspires you?

Everything!

I’m a creative at heart and therefore pretty much everything I see has some lasting effect, whether it be something in nature, someone else’s design, something the kids do, a story the other half tells me about his day at work or someone else’s achievements.

They all inspire me to be better tomorrow than I am today.

Thank you for reading this you wonderful people, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

If you are thinking of a career in Graphic Design, go for it, you can achieve amazing things!
