How to create an automatic discount for your Shopify store

Discounting with Shopify

Offers are a great tool to enhance sales of your products. Luckily, the Shopify Discounts section provides you with an easy tool for setting these up automatically.

There are obviously many different discounts or offers that can be setup, so please feel free to experiment with these, but the one we’re going to look at today is Buy X get Y, specifically Buy 2 T-shirts and get 1 free.

Navigate to the Discounts page

• In your Shopify admin, in the left navigation, click the Discounts menu item. By default this will take you to the Discount codes tab. In our case, we want to click the Automatic discounts tab at the top of the page.

• As we have no discounts already setup we want to click the Create automatic discount button. This can also be done by clicking the Create discount button in the top right. This will then give you the option of a discount code or automatic discount.
• Now, on the Create automatic discount page, choose a title for your discount. This will be seen by customers, when they enter the checkout process, so make sure it can easily be understood. In our case, we are going to call it October Tees.
• Next, we need to make sure that, if the customer adds 2 t-shirts to their cart, an additional 1 is added free. Select Buy X get Y.

What does the customer need to buy to qualify?

• Under the Customer buys section, choose Minimum quantity of items.
• Enter 2 in the Quantity field and select Specific collections from the Any items from drop down.

• Now, click Browse to find the collection you would like to limit the customer to. Check the box against the collection, in our case T-shirts, and click Add. Multiple collections can be selected if required.

What does the customer get for qualifying?

• Under the Customer gets section, enter a quantity of 1 and set the drop down as Specific collections.

• Click Browse to find the collection you would like to limit the customer to. Check the box against the collection, in our case T-shirts, and click Add. Again, multiple collections can be selected if required.
• Next, select the Free radio button under the AT A DISCOUNTED VALUE heading.
• As this discount doesn’t require any further configuration, all other settings can be left as they are.
• A brief summary can be seen on the right hand side. Once happy, click Save discount.

• A notification will display at the top of the page to inform you that the automatic discount has been created successfully.

Summary

The general design will differ per theme but now, when the customer adds a third t-shirt to the basket, this is automatically discounted using the October Tees offer we have just set up.
